All learners and instructors must ensure that private information is not made public.
Applicable Principles
Generative AI Literacy
- Instructors and learners need to understand how generative AI works.
Data Privacy and Security
- Instructors and learners should receive training on data privacy and security best practices.
- Instructors need to comply with data protection laws and security practices.
Practical Application (the what)
Most generative tools use the inputs from users to train the tools themselves. This means that some form of a user’s input can become public eventually by being incorporated into a future response by the tool. Anything sent as part of a prompt might be seen by human reviewers or assessed in some other way. Instructors should teach learners that they should never input anything into a generative AI tool that should not be made public. This includes text, images, and videos. Instructors should read the terms of service for the generative AI tools they use and recommend to learners. Teaching learners how to understand the terms of service, at least as those pertaining to the security of user inputs, is an essential part of helping learners become more digitally literate.
