Best Practice: Transparency in AI Use

Objective: Promote an ethical approach to AI use by being transparent about its role in academic and professional outputs. 

Practical Application : Clearly disclose the use of AI in the creation of content, including research, reports, and any professional documentation. This includes acknowledging the contribution of AI in idea generation, analysis, and drafting stages. 

  • Faculty should make certain students are aware of biases of AI tools and how to choose tools which will minimize the potential bias of the datasets used. Faculty should disclose the use of AI within all steps of the research process, including methodology and data analysis, being specific on how AI is being chosen and used, as well as noting any ethical considerations or introduced bias need to be addressed due to the use of AI. Faculty should specify within syllabi and course descriptions how AI can be used within their courses and what biases could be introduced because the use of AI tools. Faculty should be transparent the use of AI tools in grading, plagiarism detection software, learning management systems, and assessment tools. 
  • Service units and staff should be transparent in the use of AI in administrative decision-making processes as well as how AI tools are being used to enhance services. Specific attention should be given to and communicated about how these tools are monitored, improved, and implemented, and how to use them and functionality. 
  • Students need to be transparent about the use of AI in completing coursework and know how to properly cite the AI tools according to faculty’s specified expectations. Students should be made aware of how AI-driven study aids and tutoring systems are being offered and any limitations or biases that those tools might create. Student run initiatives and clubs should be openly communicating the use of AI tools and technologies are being used in their operations  

Outcome: Fostering trust and credibility within and outside the organization, ensuring all stakeholders are aware of the use of AI technologies in operations.
