Ethical and Responsible Use of Generative AI

As generative AI becomes more prevalent, the university acknowledges its transformative potential while committing to its responsible and ethical use.

Generative AI presents great opportunities to the university for efficiency and innovation, yet its use carries certain risks.

Generative AI:

  • May not adhere to the ethical, professional and intellectual property standards to which university researchers and educators hold themselves
  • May not comply with laws and regulations governing data and content use
  • Often lack transparency regarding what is collected, processed stored and shared
  • Can generate false, misleading or inaccurate content
  • Could be collecting users’ personal information during interactive and conversational sessions
  • May require new agreements or updates to existing contracts or agreements for lawful use

It is important to note that AI is evolving rapidly, and the associated risks can vary or change over time. For questions, guidance or feedback, contact the privacy team at privacy@illinois.edu.
